Betty Li, OD

Dr. Betty Li is originally from Sacramento but has been living in the Bay Area for the past 11 years, having attended UC Berkeley for both her undergraduate and optometry school education. Throughout her schooling, she attended various conferences, including the American Academy of Optometry (AAO) and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), to present papers and posters on optometry case reports and research in amblyopia (also known as lazy eye) with the Levi Lab.

Dr. Li wanted to round out her time at UC Berkeley by completing a residency in Primary Care Optometry with an emphasis in Community Health Optometry at the Herbert Wertheim School of Optometry & Vision Science at the University of California, Berkeley. During her residency, Dr. Li presented lectures on the ocular manifestations of vitamin A deficiency, a case report on craniopharyngioma, and a review of the latest dry eye and Demodex blepharitis treatments. Throughout her residency, Dr. Li also collaborated with her team to implement their project titled SPECS, “Sight for Pupils through Early Childhood Screening” as part of the inaugural cohort of the UC Berkeley School of Public Health’s Social Impact Innovation Grant program. This project helped to increase access to comprehensive eye care and vision assessments for low-income preschool and school-aged children in the Oakland area and to increase parental education on the impact of healthy vision on early childhood development.

Dr. Li’s diverse clinical training ranges from prestigious hospital-based settings – including the University of California San Francisco (UCSF), San Francisco Veterans Affairs (SFVA) Medical Center, and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center – to community health centers in the Bay Area, including the West Oakland Health Center (now Baywell Health), Eastmont Wellness Center, and Over 60 Health Center. Dr. Li manages a wide range of eye-related conditions, including cataracts, diabetes, and macular degeneration, with particular interests in dry eye disease, glaucoma, and amblyopia. In her free time, she enjoys hand-whisking her own matcha lattes, making milk tea for her friends, and landscape photography.
